Will Gas Prices Ever Go Down?

With food banks running bare and many lower income families having to choose between groceries and gas, everyone is wondering, will gas prices ever go down? With emerging nations like China putting a strain on the supply of oil, it seems unlikely that gas prices will ever be as low as they once were. China's unprecedented growth has catapulted the country to the front of industrialization. As old Beijing is razed in order to create a new, modern city, the country's demand on worldwide oil supplies grows. China's oil needs are only going to increase in the coming years, and as that demand grows, the price of gas is going to continue to climb.

There is also the problem of production costs. Getting oil out of the Gulf of Mexico is no small task. Companies have to pay workers to live on the oil rigs, usually in two week shifts. The job itself requires technical expertise as well, which demands higher pay. With the cost of production high, oil prices can only fall so much before it costs too much to keep the oil rigs open and they start shutting them down. When oil rigs are shut down, it lowers the amount of supply and immediately boosts the price of oil. There are others who don't think that oil operations will shut down, just because the cost of renting idle equipment would be too much. It makes more sense to make some money, even if it doesn't cover production costs, than to make nothing and pay for idle equipment. Whether or not this is true, it doesn't seem likely that the cost of producing oil is going to slide; therefore the price of gas isn't going to go down either.

Steel prices also play a part in the cost of oil, and as the price of steel rises, thanks to the sudden increase in building in developing countries, the cost of making a barrel of oil rises. So with steel prices soaring, production costs rising, and emerging nations demanding more oil than ever, it doesn't look as though gas prices will ever go down.
