The job itself requires technical expertise as well, which demands higher pay. When oil rigs are shut down, it lowers the amount of supply and immediately boosts the price of oil. There are others who don't think that oil operations will shut down, just because the cost of renting idle equipment would be too much. It makes more sense to make some money, even if it doesn't cover production costs, than to make nothing and pay for idle equipment. Whether or not this is true, it doesn't seem likely that the cost of producing oil is going to slide; therefore the price of gas isn't going to go down either.

Steel prices also play a part in the cost of oil, and as the price of steel rises, thanks to the sudden increase in building in developing countries, the cost of making a barrel of oil rises. So with steel prices soaring, production costs rising, and emerging nations demanding more oil than ever, it doesn't look as though gas prices will ever go down.
